How To Show Your Employees Some Love

How To Show Your Employees Some Love

Talking about love in the workplace may be seen as taboo, off-limits, and prohibited. But when I talk about love in the workplace, I’m not talking about office romances and relationship policies.

When I discuss the concept of love in the workplace while coaching managers and leaders, it’s usually disguised as gratitude, respect, and support.

All of these are signs of “love” that can be given to others in the workplace and even proven to be powerful performance and retention boosters.

A study by the American Psychological Association found “Almost all employees (93 percent) who reported feeling valued said that they are motivated to do their best at work, and 88 percent reported feeling engaged. This compares to just 33 percent and 38 percent, respectively, of those who said they do not feel valued.”

And research has also observed that gratitude can have a spillover effect, building trust with others and being more apt to support others on the team.

Knowing these benefits and the low to no cost of showing gratitude towards your team should be a priority and no-brainer to share and show your appreciation for your employees.

Unfortunately for some companies, leaders, and managers, it can feel more like a task in an already filled day. And employees can see through that.

A healthy workplace consists of employees who feel valued, seen, and cared for in an authentic and genuine way.

3 No-Cost Ways to Show Your Love in the Workplace

#1. Intentional Communication

The simplest but sometimes hardest way to show love is through intentional communication. This means genuine, daily check-ins with your team members or employees and listening. Remember the details they share with you and inquire about them. When they get to work, even a simple greeting shows you notice them.

#2. Professional Development

This one may seem a little odd, but it comes down to nurturing them as a professional.

Many reading this may say, “Whoa! I don’t want to do that as they may leave my company or my team,” but hear me out on this. You never know when they may leave, and if they aren’t feeling valued, they’ll leave sooner. So show them you care about them personally, and their development may lead to future turnover, but it also may not, and you have someone who is dedicated because they know you care about them.

#3. One-on Ones

Scheduling one-on-ones with your employees is an incredible way to share your gratitude with your team members, but it also provides you insight into what’s going on with them. They get to be heard and listened to, and over time, they will share challenges and opportunities, allowing you better insight into the resources and support they need. This is a win-win, and the only cost is your time.

Additionally, there are ways to show your love through monetary means, such as promotions, a pay raise, a bonus. Still, those need to be applied based on the situation and budgets available.

If you’re still looking for resolutions or ways to engage more with your employees, begin with these three ways for better retention and better business results.
